Biography

Robert Cartwright is a veteran of the San Diego music scene with a professional playing and singing career beginning well before he graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. degree in music. He is a longtime member of the American Federation of Musicians, specializing in electric and acoustic guitar and vocals.

Robert, as a successful nightclub bandleader, appeared with his bands at most of the major hotels in San Diego, including Hilton Hotels, Sheraton Hotels, Atlantis-Seaworld, Ramada Inns, Royal Inns, Atlas Hotels and Black Angus Restaurants. After 14 years of steady work in nightclubs, he began specializing in stage shows, conventions and corporate or private parties. He was the guitarist for numerous stage productions with organizations such as The San Diego Civic Light Opera (Starlight) Orchestra (eight years), The San Diego Symphony Pops Orchestra, The Old Globe Theatre and others.

As a recording studio guitarist and vocalist, Robert has been heard on numerous albums and commercials for clients such as Yamaha, Kodak, Buick, Travelodge, Home Federal Savings, Karl's Shoes, DHL Airlines, Holiday Inns of Hawaii, Nissan, American Savings, Montgomery Ward, Best Western Hotels, U-Totem and Frazier Farms.

Discovering an interest early on in "the other side of the glass" as a recording engineer, he trained in a San Diego studio under a fine engineer and later became the chief engineer at the facility, also freelancing in audio post-production at a high-end video facility. During this time, he created a studio at home to get his own creative output "on tape" (he wrote a musical and a number of songs, several of which were recorded by major labels) and became sought-after in his personal studio for small to medium projects.

In 1996, Robert was recruited by Network Music to head the digital editing and mastering department which had three Sonic Solutions suites. Network Music was eventually bought by BMG and then later by Universal Music and became part of the Killer Tracks library, with which Robert continues to work as a freelance engineer. He is also often called upon to mix projects done at other personal studios, and to do remote recordings for several Community Concert Bands and Universities such as Point Loma Nazarene University. He has been a guest lecturer on audio and sound systems at PLNU as well as several San Diego churches.

Robert long ago realized that, with the growth of affordable semi-pro recording equipment and software, many creative projects are now being recorded at personal studios and savvy recording musicians are recognizing that they need help in the mixing process and in affordable mastering to help their projects compete with the big boys. He gets great satisfaction in coaxing the best possible quality out of a track and he understands that it is not just a song, it expresses an artist's heart and soul. Recognizing and remaining true to the artist's vision is the highest priority.
